Retirement Age Hike 2025: Government Confirms No Change for Central Employees

Consecutive social media posts by individuals and other updates suggested an increase in the retirement age for central government employees from 60 to 62 years, but the Government of India has clarified beyond doubts that no such proposal is at any stage of consideration.

Government’s Clarification

In March 2025, in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of State for Personnel, Jitendra Singh, unequivocally stated that the government had no intention to change the existing retirement age of 60 years for central government employees. This statement had been made in response to a question raised in either house of Parliament and was hence aimed at dispelling the shadow of rumors regarding a possible change in the policy.

Again strengthening this stand was a fact-check issued by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) in November 2024 that clarified and refuted assertions circulating on social media to the effect that the retirement age would be increased to 62 years from the 1st of April 2025. The PIB declared these claims as false and urged the public to verify contradicting news only from official government communications.

State Government Employees

Though retirement for central government employees is fixed at 60 years, state governments can provide different retirement ages for their state employees. With this proviso, retirement ages do differ in several states based on regional policies and administrative decisions

EPFO Pension Scheme Considerations

This is a proposal estimated by the EPFO to raise pensionable age under the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS-95) from 58 to 60 years. Now, contributors can contribute to the pension scheme only till the age of 58 years. Anytime a pensionable age is fixed at 60, that is at par with the standard retirement age of the Central Government employees; thereby, it may stand in favor of greater pension benefits for contributors.

Conclusion

Currently, there exists no change in the retirement age for central government employees that remains at 60 years. The government has made it clear that there are no proposals under consideration to change this age. Employees should keep themselves updated through official sources and simply ignore unconfirmed information going about in social media.

For accurate and the latest information, one should look to official announcements from the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, and the Press Information Bureau.
